I was chatting to a girlfriend the other day and she was talking about always reaching for the same things when she got dressed in the morning: skinny jeans, nice top, cool jewellery.
It got me thinking about style uniforms. Do you wear variations of the same things; have similar outfits on high rotation? If you peak into my wardrobe you’ll find lots of collared shirts and dresses, blazers, pencil skirts. I love structured pieces – they suit my shape, work with my lifestyle and make me feel good. I think that’s the key with style uniforms – they are personal but you know when you’ve discovered yours. Even if you’ve worn that white shirt, fuchsia skirt or pair of skinny jeans a dozen times before –if you feel good wearing it why not keep wearing it? This is real life after all and we will, and should, rewear our clothes. In fact, if you know you feel and look fabulous in your red wrap dress why not buy the dress in other great colours? A uniform is more than one piece – it’s a wardrobe that is completely you and full of pieces you love.
While our uniforms may need to adapt to lifestyle changes – babies, jobs etc – once you’ve found yours you understand what type of dresser your are; frocks and frills, classic tailoring, boho/hippie etc. It certainly makes shopping simpler.
While the word uniform sounds very strict – shopping and dressing is about having fun and experimenting. It can also be tempting to road test someone else’s uniform especially when they look so fabulous. You’ll soon know if the piece doesn’t feel ‘you’.
The secret to keeping things interesting is wearing pieces different ways, layering and also playing with accessories. I love seeing how a new cheap and cheerful necklace can make a tried and tested outfit feel fresh.
Do you have a style uniform? Do you need help finding yours?
